Blind Coin Dealer Spots Fake Silver Coins

Monte Mensing of Monte’s Coins & More in Stayton knew the “historic” silver dollars were fake the moment he touched them.
Years of experience handling hundreds of thousands of coins allowed him to immediately tell the coins were too light to be silver dollars. He dropped the silver dollars on the countertop for a second test and his judgment was confirmed — the coins didn’t “ring” the way silver does.
Mensing is blind, but that hasn’t hampered his ability to correctly value coins.
Mensing and his sighted assistant, Roger Lodi, examined coins that came from three different cities in the last few weeks and all of them — from the 1796 Bust Silver Dollar to the Carson City Dollar — are as phony as the proverbial $3 bill. read more...
